Professor Gerrit Betlem, a close friend and colleague to many of us and a leading scholar in European Private Law, passed away on 26th July 2010. There is an obituary on Southampton’s website.
As will I; Gerrit was incredibly supportive when I first started this website back in 2006. He frequently sent links to items deep within the European Commission’s website (that I would never have found myself), and he was in all things kind and generous.
Yvonne Baatz says:
I had the great good fortune to teach the commercial conflict of laws course at the Univeristy of Southampton with Gerrit. He was a wonderful and generous colleague with so many good ideas both as to the content and presentation of the course. I always enjoyed my discussions with him. He introduced me to this website. I have learnt a great deal from Gerrit and hope to carry forward his ideas in his half of the course which I have now inherited. He is much missed.
It was impossible to speak to Gerrit without catching some of his enthusiasm for the subject under discussion. I will miss him.
